Please join MBCA’s Central VA section for a July afternoon on the Rappahannock River. Our neighbors from the VA and Greater Washington sections are cordially invited as well. Locally-sourced fried chicken and picnic food and drinks will be provided; please feel free to contribute a dish or dessert (coordinate with Robyn when you register for the event).

For those interested in making a weekend of it, there are several charming B & B’s in the area: The Chesapeake Inn, Urbana; Atherston Hall, Urbana; The Tides Inn, Irvington; Hope and Glory, Irvington.

Directions for those without GPS:

From Richmond:

Take Rt. 360 toward Tappahannock then turn right to get on Rt. 17 South. Go about 22 miles from Tappahannock; at about 21 ½ miles, you will see the Virginia Raceway on your right. Get in left lane and turn left across median strip onto Route 640. (There will be a Big John’s gas station on the North bound lane of Rt. 17 at this turn off). After the first 1.3 miles there will be a fork in the road…bear to the left to stay on Rt. 640. Follow Rt. 640 for about another 3.8 miles past fire house on left.
When you are 2 blocks from the water the road doglegs to left and then quick right. Follow this and go to second dirt road, which is Oyster House Lane, and turn left. Go to about the 7th house on right and turn right at the white fence that says “Tyer #142” on it (not the first short white fence you’ll see which only flanks the entrance to the neighbor’s driveway).

From Virginia Beach:

Take Rt. 17 N toward Yorktown/Gloucester for about 45 miles. Turn right at the Big John’s gas station onto Water View Rd (Rt. 640). After about 1.3 miles you’ll come to a fork in the road. Bear left. Follow the road for another 3.8 miles past the fire house on left. Follow road left and then immediately right again. Go .1 miles.
Turn left onto Oyster House Lane. 142 Oyster House Lane is on the right side of the road and has a long white fence around the yard with “Tyer #142” written on it (not the first short white fence you’ll see which only flanks the entrance to the neighbor’s driveway).

From Northern Virginia:

Take I-95 South toward Richmond. Merge onto VA-3 E via EXIT 130A toward Fredericksburg. Merge onto US-17-BR S / VA-2 S toward Tappahannock/Bowling Green. Turn left onto US-17 S. Continue to follow US-17 S for 62 miles. Turn left onto Water View Rd for about 5 miles. Take the 1st left onto Oyster House Lane.

From Charlottesville
Take I-64 East toward Richmond. Merge onto I-295 S via EXIT 177 toward Airport/Washington/Norfolk. Merge onto US 360 E via exit 37A toward Tappahannock. Turn right onto Howerton Rd, go 10 miles. Turn right onto US-17 South for 10 miles.

Co-hosted by MBCA, the BMW Car Club of America and the Porsche Club of America, this one-day MBCA national special event brings enthusiasts, owners, and aficionados of distinctive German cars together to view three of the finest marques in the world. The event will feature separate club concours judging sites and combined corral parking areas.

Building on two very successful years and now in only its third year, Legends of the Autobahn has become one of the “must see” attractions of the world-renowned Monterey Classic Car Week. Rancho Cañada Golf Club—just a few miles from the beautiful Pacific coastline and the breathtaking Pebble Beach—provides a stunning backdrop to view German vehicles of all ages. In addition to mingling among these precision cars, there will be food, displays, club booths, and a Spaten Biergarten. Early word has it that a special display of Gullwings will be featured this year, along with other special classic Mercedes-Benz.

For those interested in entering the Concours in one of six judged classes for 1992 and older vehicles, a $60 entry fee will apply. For those wishing to display only in the corral (any vintage), a $30 entry fee will apply. A gourmet buffet lunch and event polo shirts are optional. The discounted “early bird” registration deadline is August 1, and all registration closes on August 10.

Your registration will go directly to MBCA. If you don’t want to enter your car (but why wouldn’t you?!), please stop by to view some of Germany’s best vehicles. There is no admission gate fee.

From the North
Travel Route 29 South into Charlottesville. Exit onto the Route 250 West bypass (Lynchburg, Staunton, Richmond). Travel to the third exit, Route 250 West. At the traffic light, turn left onto Route 250 West and drive for one mile. Turn left onto Ednam Drive at the third stoplight. The entrance to the resort will be on your left.

From the South
Travel Route 29 North to Charlottesville. Pass under the I-64 junction, continue for 1.5 miles and take the exit for Route 250 West. Turn left onto Route 250 West and drive for one mile. Turn left onto Ednam Drive at the fourth stoplight. The entrance to the resort will be on your left.

From the East or West
Travel I-64 to Exit 118-B (Charlottesville, Culpeper). Continue for 1.5 miles and take the exit for Route 250 West. Turn left onto Route 250 West and drive for one mile. Turn left onto Ednam Drive at the fourth stoplight. The entrance to the resort will be on your left.

The Central Virginia Section of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America invites you to explore the back roads of southern Albemarle County- deep in the heart of the Monticello wine region- this November 12^th.  The event will consist of a relaxed drive through the countryside, approximately 1 ½ -2 hours, eventually ending up at Delfosse Vineyards and Winery (http://www.delfossewine.com/) for a reservation-only “vertical tasting” of 4 vintages of their award-winning Meritage.

If you have never attended one of our section events, this is an ideal, low-impact way to begin your relationship with the members of MBCA’s Central VA section.  Meet the group at the departure site to kick tires and enjoy the foliage and countryside as we make our way south, or simply meet the group directly at the vineyard around 2 pm.  You can’t miss us; we will be the ones driving Mercedes-Benzes…

There is no registration fee to participate, but the winery charges for the reservation-only vertical tasting.  Regular tastings are also available at any time.  If you would like to take part in the vertical Meritage tasting, purchasing tickets in advance is strongly recommended.  The vertical tasting is $20.00/person and is available for pre-purchase through their website (below).

Our Driving Route Directions

1. Left out of parking lot, right at light on Route 20 South.  Immediate left onto Route 53 East toward Palmyra.
2. Pass beneath Monticello stone bridge; continue past Simeon church and Jefferson Vineyard; right onto 795.
3. Stay straight onto 627 (Carters Mountain Road) passing Trump Winery.
4. At stop sign, left onto Route 20 South toward Scottsville.
5. At Keene crossroad, right and then another immediate right (past veterinarian clinic) onto 712 (Plank Road).
6. Follow approximately 15 miles to stop sign; straight across Route 29 toward Batesville.
7. Left on 635 (Craigs Store Road).
8. Left onto Route 151 South.
9. Left onto Route 6 East.
   1. If you are feeling adventurous, and don’t mind smooth but unpaved country roads, follow this alternate route, otherwise stay on Route 6 and go to step # 10.

i.      Left onto 810.

ii.      Left at the stop sign.

iii.      Left onto 634.

iv.      Left onto 616.

1. Left onto Route 29 North.
2. Left onto 616 toward DelFosse Winery (last .8 mile is unpaved but smooth).
3. Arrive at 500 DelFosse Winery Lane, Faber, VA.

I am contacting each of you to let you know about the Ginter Park Fall Festival that will be held on 8 October 2011.  Our church, Ginter Park United Methodist Church, is having its festival (vendors, food, crafts, etc.) on that Saturday, and I am trying to round up a good selection of classic cars, motorcycles, hot rods, and sports cars to display at the event.  I am hoping that each of you will consider entering one of your vehicles, or at least, spread the word about the event.  I have attached a flyer for the show to this e-mail. Last year’s event was a huge success with over 300 automobiles on display and many vendors offering unique goods, services and even luxury car test drives.  This year the festival promises to be more spectacular, with new vendors and displays, Hot Air Balloon rides, and many other activities for the family’s enjoyment.  The Winery will feature a variety of exquisite Virginia wines from its own Winery and other Virginia Vineyards.
The featured marque for 2011 will be Austin-Healey, along with other unique Designs of Donald Healey, and a special display of Vintage Racing Cars.  Joining the Healeys will be such extraordinary nameplates as: Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, Bentley, AC Bristol, MG, Ferrari, Jaguar, Lotus, Porsche, Triumph, Mini, Morris Minor, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Saab, Volvo, Alfa Romeo, Lamborghini, Pantera, TVR and many more.

CAR AND CARRIAGE CARAVAN

The Car and Carriage Caravan Museum exhibit is a tour of milestones in transportation, including authentically restored cars, carriages, coaches and costumes, dating from 1725 to 1941. The centerpiece of the collection is the 1892 Benz, one of the oldest cars in the country still in operating condition. Other highlights include an 1840 Conestoga Wagon, a 1908 Baker Electric, a 1913 Stanley Steamer, and Rudolph Valentino’s 1925 Rolls Royce.

Tours depart approximately every 20 minutes throughout the day. Each tour is about an hour in length. The Car and Carriage Caravan and Luray Valley Museum, included in the general admission fee, offer a self-guided tour that each take about 30-45 minutes.

The Mercedes-Benz Club of America (MBCA) is offering members who own or drive AMG vehicles an exclusive opportunity to participate in the first MBCA SLS AMG Performance Week in Germany. This event will not be available elsewhere. It only costs $45 to join MBCA, if you’re not already a member.

The event will feature partipants’ driving the SLS and other AMG vehicles on a variety of roads in Germany as well as on the Autobahn. There will be an in depth visit to the Sindelfingen plant, the SLS production area, and the Center of Excellence; you’ll also visit the Mercedes-Benz Museum and the Classic Center.

The trip is scheduled for June 5 to June 10 and will not be offered again in 2011. Our friend Jim O’Sullivan is the contact person; tell Jim that Greg Magnus said hello! Additional information, clarification, and registration details are available here for those interested.
