Heimatfest – Vintage Races, Barber, Talladega, Concours
Heimatfest – Something For Everyone
28 May -1 June 2009 | Birmingham, AL
This unique event staged by the Alabama and Peachtree Sections will feature so many activities that few people will be able to participate in all of them. Touring enthusiasts will have exhilarating drives upon lightly traveled roads to interesting sights each of the five days.
Destinations include racing go-karts, winery tour and tasting, the Talladega Motorsports Hall of Fame Museum, laps of the Talladega Track, a dramatic road to Mt. Cheaha, another breathtaking road along the longest and deepest canyon east to the Mississippi laced with unforgettable views of the canyon and beautiful waterfalls.
This will all be crowned with performance driver education and laps of the breathtaking Barber Road Course and visits to the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum with its unequaled collections of motorcycles (1300) and Lotus race cars (50+).
Others might want to tour the beautiful suburban areas that are nationally ranked.
Concours enthusiasts will be able to participate in a concours d’elegance/car show at the Barber Motorsports Park with its 70+ acres of manicured plantings. In addition to the museum, participants, will be welcome to view the weekend’s vintage races and to visit the paddock area.
Performance Driving Enthusiasts will not only be able to watch the races, they will be able to participate in a defensive driving clinic in both wet and dry conditions conducted by MBCA’s performance driving director Frank Cozza. The laps on Talladega’s 33 degree banks will be at rapid speeds.
There will also be a timed autocross that can extend up to 1 mile.
The crowning event will be a full day of performance driving education on the F-1 and Indy car Barber Road Course which has been called the most beautiful and most challenging road course in North America. The four-star Wynfrey Hotel/Spa which is connected to an upscale enclosed mall and surrounded by several restaurants and theaters is giving us a special reduced rate for this event. Evenings will be filled with dinners and speakers from Mercedes-Benz and MBCA. The Thursday evening will feature a time to talk with Road and Track editor-at-large, Peter Egan.
There will also be tech sessions on both the cars and performance driving. If the Galleria Mall’s shopping is not enough for some, the “Summit” is just two miles down I-459. This one is even more upscale, anchored by Sak’s Fifth Avenue and similar stores.
A drive through Americas 9th wealthiest suburb and the only one of the top 10 in the Southeast is adjacent to this. You will be amazed at how many star cars you see in this Mercedes-Benz town!
You will find this area beautiful, friendly, and undiscovered. It is truly the “Oregon of the east” just two hours from Atlanta. Be sure to include Heimatfest (Home Festival) at the home of Mercedes-Benz in America in your 2009 calendar.
