Hi Folks and MBCA greetings from Smith Mtn Lake.

We appreciate being informed about events, and as we view the 11 January brunch have determined it just a bit too far for a "jaunt." (How do you say that in German?)

Anyway, we will stay tuned for upcoming offerings. We do have a few attractions in SW Virginia, if you are interested in suggestions. The National D Day Memorial in Bedford is well worth a visit, with a TERRIFIC little "old world" cafe nearby. It is The Millstone Tea Room and we consider it a local gem. Of course, there is the Chateau Morrisette at MP 171 on Blue Ridge Parkway. And The Virginia Dare faux paddlewheel on Smith Mtn Lake is always fun. Another Parkway attraction is Peaks of Otter Restaurant. Peaks of Otter offers some terrific views, bird migration flyways and a moderate trail (maybe 30-45 mins) up to Sharp Peak. The highest point (4000 ft) of the Parkway in VA is located 11 miles north, followed by an exhilerating descent to the James River at Big Island.

For those interested in Virginia history, of course there is Appomattox Court House with antiques center and really good bargains on oriental rugs. Nice river restaurant overlooking the creek that used to power the mills formerly located in town.

Our favorite winery event of 2007 was held at Keswick, just outside Charlottesville. They could not have been nicer. A wonderful lunch prepared for us in the Cellar, accompanied by a special wine for each course. The Winemaker is a young, energetic, outgoing and informative South African. Had a great time and if you contact them ask for Kris and tell her we sent ya! (That's my Sarah Palin imitation.)

For "day trips," may we suggest perhaps a 2-3 hour (max) drive to a nice lunch/brunch, followed by some sort of attraction (perhaps 1-2 hours), then return drive home (or, as an alternative, some may wish to stay overnight locally for a closer look at attractions offered).

Our best to you.
